They were probably worried about the shoes, particularly if they've walked in them outside. Only "swimshoes" or water shoes (or flippers/fins for scuba training) are normally allowed, because of hygiene and the risk of breaking the plastic vents on the bottom of the pool (which is why I'm not allowed to swim in nice shiny black (or even pink) T-bar high heels, lol) Plus you might kick someone in the face swimming behind you. Plus most (but not all) pools don't allow jeans (or any heavy cotton, such as velvet or corduroy, sadly). Teeshirts are usually no problem, if they're clean, and I've seen several people swimming in socks (though I prefer stripy tights or silk stockings, lol). Always fill your day with wonderful things :)
